Inflection Point
Although it is a sad that Israel has to once again do the dirty work and fight toe to toe with the enemies of the west, it is even sadder how western opinion sways in the wind offering at best, weak support, and at worst, condemnation for Israel. Even the United States, an avid supporter of Israel, waivered in its support slightly when they warned Israel to be careful not to destabilize the young democratic government of Lebanon. Once again, as expected with Europe leading the way, western governments consistently defy logic, coming down on the side of absurdity.
How can any government be critical of Israel's response to an unprovoked attack across its sovereign borders by terrorists? How would the U.S. react to Mexican commandos attacking the border patrol, killing 3 agents and kidnapping 2? What does the world want from Israel? We certainly know what the Arab nations want. Even when they don't say it, in their hearts they pray for Israel to disapper, for the Jews to go away. What everyone in the west forgets is that attached to the Arab prayer of "Death to Israel, death to the Jews..." is "...and death to the west". If Israel was gone and the Jews were no more, the Islamo-facists would seek out another enemy and it certainly would be western society. We only have to look at the recent muslim riots across Europe to understand what Islamic sentiment is or to pay attention to terrorist attacks in Madrid, London, and New York to understand who the Islamic world's targets are.
With the current destablizing event occurring in the middle-east, it is concerning that a number of parallel situations have been stirred up. The west has been dealing with Iran and its nuclear program for about a year now. In addition, the North Korean's started playing games only a few weeks ago. This third track of the Israeli-(Hizbollah) Lebanese conflict might be the wind that causes the house of cards to fall over. Already, both Syria and Iran are rattling the cage, warning Israel of the danger in attacking them. Iran's fingerprints are all over the missle that hit an Israeli naval vessle off the coast of Lebanon. North Korean balked at the U.N. resolution against them and have sworn to continue with missle tests. Maybe we will get to see the Japanese response to North Korean missles being fired at them in the near future?
Historically, there are certain times that represent a physical boundary that once crossed meant that life would never be the same again. We can call this an historical inflection point. Such as the fall of roman empire, the dropping of atomic bombs in WWII, or even 9/11, these moments changed the course of life as we know it. As I write, I wonder if now we are approaching such a moment and can only hope that it will inflect in the direction of the good and just away from the dark and evil.
